Microtrends: Lace/Yarn-Face
Recently, there was a trend of gluing yarn or lace over your face and applying makeup on top. I've seen a few videos on Instagram of these unique tutorials. I thought it was quite innovative and just had to share. This is an example of the yarn and here is of the lace.
Now that you've watched them both, let's quickly go into some techniques I would use to make these looks.
- Notice how they use powder products instead of liquid or cream on top of the fabric. The latter could bleed through the fabric, latch onto the specific spot where it was applied and end up looking blotchy. It's not to say it's forbidden to use them, simply that it will make application more difficult. If it's nothing more than a thin line your trying to draw there's no problem with using liquids/creams.
- Speaking of making things difficult-- I wouldn't advise gluing fabric right on top of your eyelid, especially if you have hooded eyes. It will fold in your crease and feel a bit uncomfortable. And if your trying to do a complicated eyeshadow look, you won't get too far. You can see the artists in the video do their eyeshadow beforehand. What they do is apply the fabric above the crease of their upper eyelid.
- I will say scream this from the top of my lungs--PLAN THE LOOK YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE! You need to have all details sorted out. For example, lets say your using white lace because you want to replicate the appearance of an 1800's porcelain doll. Unless your skin tone is extremely fair, your going to need to cancel out with a light-colored base before gluing the lace. Even in free-styling, you will need to arrange some things together. Get the basics: tools, products to be used, colors, and a reference picture (optional). I will discuss bringing looks together as a makeup designer in the future.
- There is a variety of glues you can use to adhere the lace to your face. It just depends on what you're willing to work with. Some use spirit gum, liquid latex, and eyelash glue. I personally think eyelash glue is the most convenient option since most of us have it already. Spirit gum and latex are commonly used in theatre and special effects, so you can trust that it will latch on for a long time. Make sure you carefully peel any adhesive off as harshly pulling could be painful and/or irritate your skin. Always use a cleanser specifically for removing the adhesive you used (in the case of eyelash glue you can use a regular makeup remover)!
It's amazing to see the different ways people break from conventional makeup. It's perfect for creepy characters/dolls/ballerina's in theatre productions!
